Andy Haefner is a PhD student in the Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley. He received undergraduate degrees from the University of Michigan in Nuclear Engineering and a BFA in Jazz Studies. His research interests focus on gamma-ray image reconstruction algorithms and writing these algorithms in real-time imaging software. Some of the imaging scenarios he has worked on include finding unknown sources in urban environments, materials verification in nuclear processing facilities and Fukushima decontamination. As a hobby, Andy writes music software that improvises music in real-time that he performs with while playing saxophone.
